Another 187 Dupe and Studio Tools Brushes Review

So I was walking around Target, not intending to buy anything makeup-related, and I stumbled across the Studio Tools section near the Sally Hansen nail products display. Damn, I was in for some impulse buys. I had already owned the Studio Tools Smudge Brush, which I love, and decided to pick up three other brushes. And after I remembered seeing a video that Kaycee did about the Studio Tools Dual-Finish Brush, I decided I had to get it.

The Studio Tools Dual-Finish Brush is $6.99 and it's a stippling brush with natural and synthetic fibers. The entire brush measures a little over 6.5" long and has a transparent, dark-gray plastic handle, as do all the brushes. The handles look solid black but if you hold them up to the light, you'll see right through them. They are also made in China and so far, only a couple hairs from the crease brush has shed.

Now, I don't own the full size MAC 187 because I don't use liquid foundation (watch Kaycee's video that compares the full-size MAC 187 to the Studio Tools), so I'm comparing the Studio Tools brush with other stippling brushes that I own. I love these types of brushes for blush, bronzer, and contouring.

For my previous posts about these other 187 dupes, click below:
Flirt! Feather Dust-her Brush from Kohl's
Everyday Minerals Skunkless Foptic Brush

~The Studio Tools 187 dupe has the perfect ratio of natural to synthetic bristles. It's not as dense as the EDM and not as sparse as the Flirt! brush - it's perfect. I also love the height of the bristles and the handle is chubby enough to fit comfortably in my hand without being too big. Another good thing about it is that the end of the handle is flat, so you can stand it upright on your desk or vanity. That's a good thing for me since I have no more room in my brush holders. The bristles are soft, they haven't shed (so far), and it did not smell funky right out of the package. It gets a 5 out of 5.
~If I had to rank my 4 stippling brushes in order of preference, it would be exactly like the pictures below: Studio Tools, MAC, Flirt!, and Everyday Minerals.

********************

~The Medium Shadow Brush ($2.49) is one of those brushes you grab for when you're lazy and don't want to get out another brush. You can do a whole look with this one brush: lid, crease, outer-V, and highlight. It's super soft, not pokey at all, and made with natural hairs.
5 out of 5
~The Smudge Brush ($2.49) has shorter, stiffer bristles and it's good for packing on color on small lids or for applying three or four different colors on your lid if you're doing a rainbow look. Of course, it's also good for smudging out your eyeliner and is made with natural hairs. 5 out of 5

********************

~The last brush is the Eye Contour (crease) Brush ($1.99) and I have to say that this is now my favorite crease brush. It's not as full as the Sonia Kashuk but it's almost similar to the elf Blending brush - the Studio Tools is more tapered at the end, so it fits into your crease nicely. It's super soft and not pokey, just like all the other brushes. This is also made with natural bristles and can you believe it's only $1.99! 5 out of 5

~(BTW, the UpStage Crease brush is another fave of mine and I got this at Long's Drug, which is now converting to CVS, so I don't know if you can still find it there. I love how fluffy, tapered, and pointy this brush is and it fits perfectly into your crease - a very underrated, unknown brush.)
~The MAC pencil brush (219, not 119) is just there to give you an idea of the brush head sizes.

FINAL THOUGHTS
  1. These 4 Studio Tools brushes are affordable, easy to find (at Target), and very soft. All of them get 5 stars!
  2. All brushes have handles with flat ends, so you can stand them upright. This is a great option for the Dual-Finish brush.

Hope this helps! It's 3 in the morning and I'm going to bed! =)

Everyday Resort Palette & Small EDM Haul

PIC HEAVY and LONG! Yup, I want to show you all the details.

Everyday Resort ($10) is a new item from Everyday Minerals that consists of 4 loose shadows in a mirrored compact, which reminds me of a limited edition item from Revlon. The push-button release on the front is fairly easy to use. It also comes with a tiny bamboo brush with soft synthetic bristles, which rattles around in the compact and can be quite annoying. If you were wondering if this was hard plastic, rather than flexible, it is.

There's not a lot of product in here. (Ingredients also listed at the bottom of this post.)

EDIT: Whoops, I meant a 5 g jar, which contains 1 g of product.

Parasail: Matte, pale pink; Late Checkout: Soft pearl light pink; Kayak: Rosy brown; Spelunk: Russet brown. The latter two have semi-matte finishes rather than shimmery ones. Late Checkout has a satin finish. (Swatched over a shimmery, champagne base)

The four little containers ARE NOT jars that sit in the compact. They are plastic CAPS with a sifter hole and a FLIPTOP LID, which snaps down very well. You can pry off the caps to refill the compact by sticking some tweezers under the hinge on the back of the fliptop lid. Beware of the mess! I also experienced a little mess when I popped up the fliptop lids.

The little brush fits perfectly into the sifter hole but what am I going to do with that? It's good as a pencil brush to line the lashlines or draw an outer-V but what about for shading?

I used e.l.f.'s Defining Eye Brush as a shader brush (this is the new one and they haven't updated the picture on their website). Although it's wider than the hole, I was still able to get the product onto the brush.

You can use the top of the cap, not the lid, to smoosh the product into the bristles or to wipe, or tap, off the excess. The lid will cover the entire diameter of the cap and the peg on the lid snaps securely into the sifter hole.

English Muffin Lip Balm ($4) is definitely more pigmented than their horrible, pasty, older formula but it's still sheer. It moisturizes so well and feels like butter (like buttah, baby). It's a basic sheer, nude color that applies like a creamy lipstick. The chunks you see in the swatch is the broken edge from my first swipe, but after that, it was all good. Product amount was not listed on the sticker label that keeps peeling off on me. (See ingredients at the bottom.) EDIT: The BAD THING about this lip balm is that each time you apply it, the surface will be dry and will not glide on easily, but after a few swipes, it re-moistens itself.

Free Gifts: Cellulose sponge (which I'm happy to get because I need a new one). It's no different than a regular, rectangular sponge you clean with, except that it's half as thick and disc-shaped. I use it to remove facial masks or just when washing my face. Bird Bath is a shimmery dark blue, which I already own. *groan*

If you have Best Friends blush, then you don't need to get Time Share. They're both cool-toned, mauve-pinks - dupes. Time Share, however, is slightly darker than BF and has very minimal shimmer in it but it's definitely not a sheen finish - still good for lovers of matte blushes.

Lastly, I bought an EMPTY pressed powder compact ($3.50, limited run) because they still haven't release Golden Medium yet. *groan* I might get the Summer Bronzer later, though. The new pressed powders are pressed with caprylic oil instead of jojoba and I hope my skin doesn't react badly to that ingredient.

The compact is about 7 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick. It's about the same size as a MAC Studio Fix compact but with less rounded edges.

To see how to depot any old EDM pressed powders and how to magnetize a compact, as seen below, click here for my video.

The hole on the bottom of the new EDM compact will make it easier to switch out the pans, especially if you make the compact magnetic. BTW, the pans are about 58 mm in diameter.

*A CON about this compact is that the clear, plastic flap that goes over the blush, or whatever you put in there, DOES NOT SNAP OR LATCH IN PLACE - so that sucker rattles in there.

*ANOTHER CON is that I still prefer the design of a MAC compact or a Physician's Formula compact, because they have an empty compartment on the bottom, below the powder, that can house a brush or disc sponge.

Hope this helps! =)
The small pictures on EDM's website of white-colored products on white backgrounds aren't very helpful, don't you think?

*UPDATE*

Now that I've had the chance to use the "Everyday Resort" LOOSE PALETTE a few times, I can do more of a REVIEW:

PROS:
  • Good for travel
  • Refillable
  • Has a mirror (although it's a small strip)
  • Push button release is easy to use
  • Good when trying to sample a collection of 4 colors
  • Flat, stackable packaging

CONS:
  • Less than 1 g of product in the entire palette
  • Purchasing samples sizes of each color (1 g for $2.50 each) is the same price as the palette, but you get much more product by buying individually
  • Small pencil brush is good for lining lashlines or getting the product out, but not for anything else. It's also very stubby and hard to hold.
  • Hard to get product onto a regular-sized, shader brush
  • It's not easy to tap off excess product from your eyeshadow brush as it is when using a sample jar with a lid that you can turn upside-down
  • Somewhat messy; there is product mess when opening the flip-top lids
  • Flip-top lids of each color can be quite hard to pop open
  • Matte formula (Parasail) is a little chalky
  • Kayak is categorized as a shimmer, but the finish is more semi-matte
  • Spelunk is categorized as a pearl finish - the same as Late Checkout - but it's more of a semi-matte
  • I personally don't like the oval-shaped packaging (I guess it's not sexy enough, lol). I'd prefer something square or rectangular
FINAL THOUGHTS:
  • I won't be grabbing for this palette very often.
  • EDM, just make pressed eyeshadow quads, already! Hopefully, something small, sleek and more user-friendly.

~HOW TO MAGNETIZE YOUR NEW COMPACT~

I have depotted my old "Spring" eye palette and magnetized my new compact. Check it out.

Depot your old pressed powder (click here for video) by using an Exacto-like knife to cut a slit on the side of the cardboard halfway down, then flip over the compact and do the same thing until you slice all the way through. Pull the ring apart and the pan will be stuck to the cardboard disk on the bottom. Drop in alcohol (isopropyl) between the pan and cardboard until the pan releases easily. Don't force it! Wait until the glue is dissolved well by the alcohol.

Magnetize your new compact by cutting a rectangular strip from the metal sheet on the bottom of an elf compact ($1) and super glue it to the center of the compact. Try finding something around the house or the craft store if you don't own an elf compact. Then cut and add a rectangular-shaped "peel & stick" magnet (available at craft stores) on to the bottom of your blush/eyeshadow/foundation pan. Try to match up the magnet with the metal sheet, but it doesn't have to be perfect. (Use this same method to magnetize anything you have, like an eyeshadow palette.)

Your pressed powder ain't going anywhere! DO NOT try to use another "peel & stick" magnet in place of the metal sheet because it WILL NOT HOLD as strongly as the metal. If you do, your powder will come out easily and break!

Peel the product sticker off the bottom of your old pressed powder and stick it to the bottom of your new magnetized compact. You may have to trim it. Notice the hole at the top center. When you want to switch out your pan with something else, insert a push-pin - or whatever will fit - into the hole to release your pan. Be careful not to let your pan fall because EDM pressed powders are very delicate.

Have fun! =)

Oil Slick Control: Powders, Products & Methods

***The following post will contain my personal opinions and experiences. What may not work for me may work for you. We are all different.***

Controlling an oil slick is very hard for an oily gal. I've tried all these products, plus the two methods at the end, and I'll tell you how each of them worked out for me.

POWDERS

I will start out with the best product that has helped control my oilies- Kryolan Anti-Shine Powder!

~TEXTURE: This translucent, finely-milled, light, dusty and airy powder goes on smoothly and gives my face a nice matte appearance without being too cakey or drying.
~AMOUNT/PRICE: The jar is super huge and you get 30 grams for around $15 with shipping. (Just Google this product because there are various places where you can purchase it.)
~INGREDIENTS: Dimethylimidazolidinone Rice Starch, Talc. Yes, it contains the dreaded talc which I religiously stay away from but at least it's not the first ingredient. I don't know what the ratio of the two ingredients could be- 51% rice starch & 49% talc or 98% rice starch & 2% talc? Who knows?
~SKIN REACTION: Although it contains talc, I have not broke out but I do make sure that I don't use it every single day. I might use it for 3 or 4 days in a row and skip the next day or the next two days- only because I know I've been sensitive to face products containing talc but that was when talc was the first ingredient. So far, so good! Yay!
~APPLICATION: I use a stippling brush to apply. It comes with a powder puff but I think that would apply too much product and I don't need to pack this on. I usually reapply mid day and after a work day. Just load some up on a retractable brush and you're good to go.
~BOX DESCRIPTION: "Anti-Shine powder finishes the makeup and gives a natural matte appearance. Ideal for long lasting touch up even after hours of setting the makeup without changing it." (Made in Germany)
~OIL CONTROL RATING/REPURCHASE?: Since it's the best thing I've tried so far, I have to give it a 5 out of 5. Definitely repurchasing, although I think this jar is going to last a looong time!

Next up is the Kaolin Powder in Sunlight from Everyday Minerals...

~TEXTURE: Not as finely-milled and light as the Kryolan. It's a nice primer and finishing powder though. Matte and translucent. Also available in "Fair" and "Soft Bronze" but still translucent.
~AMOUNT/PRICE: 6 grams for $12, or can be purchased in a 6-piece kit for $34
~INGREDIENTS: Kaolin Clay, Mica, Iron Oxides
~SKIN REACTION: No adverse reactions, however, I don't use it too often.
~APPLICATION: A flat-top or round kabuki worked best for me.
~WEBSITE DESCRIPTION: "The best oil-absorbing kaolin clay and light-reflecting mica blended to silky perfection to produce Start to Finish Sunlight! Use as a primer or finish powder to help your skintone have a softer and smoother look with a radiant finish."
~OIL-CONTROL RATING/REPURCHASE?: I was excited to try it because I've heard kaolin is really good but sadly, it didn't really do anything for me. I don't know why? I give it a 2 out of 5 and I won't be repurchasing- it was a free gift anyway!

********************

Since the EDM Kaolin Powder didn't help so much, I figured I'd try something with a different type of clay and silica. So here's the
Oil Absorb from Purely Cosmetics.

~TEXTURE: It's a tad rough- not as smooth as all the other powders in this post (the Kryolan being the finest and smoothest). The color is a light gray but goes on translucent.
~AMOUNT/PRICE: Approximately 8 grams for $16.
~INGREDIENTS: Bentonite Clay, Silica, Calcium Carbonate, Kaolin Clay
~SKIN REACTION: Nothing bad so far
~APPLICATION: It doesn't stick to my flat top or powder brush easily; it kind of just moves around in lid. I like to use it before foundation, mixed with silk powder. Then I use silk powder again over my foundation.
~WEBSITE DESCRIPTION: "Use a light layer under foundation to absorb excess oil. Newly reformulated! Made of finely ground bentonite clay, which is known for it's high absorption properties. We've now added silica, calcium carbonate and kaolin clay for ease of smooth application, increased adhesion and oil absorption, and blurred optical effects."
~OIL-CONTROL RATING/REPURCHASE?: Since it contained bentonite clay, like my favorite Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, I thought it would help control the oilies really well but it was ok; it works much better with a silk powder. I give it a 3 out of 5 and I might repurchase, but it's a little too expensive for the size.

********************

Next up is Silk Dust and Tinted Silk Dust from Everyday Minerals, which have been DISCONTINUED, but you can find silk powder at a lot of other mineral makeup companies...

~TEXTURE: Fine and silky smooth, pretty much like the Kryolan. Also matte and translucent.
~AMOUNT/PRICE: Discontinued. Silk Naturals sells it for $9.95 for 2 teaspoons. Also check out Meow Cosmetics.
~INGREDIENTS: Silk powder (EDM added black currant powder seed extract). Silk powder has natural amino acids, which is supposed to be good for the skin. The untinted one can go on a little white if you put on a lot but it's still translucent. I've yet to find another tinted silk powder. Why do they always have to discontinue products that I love?!!
~SKIN REACTIONS: Nothing bad; I actually think it makes my skin better.
~APPLICATION: I use a flat-top brush and apply this everyday as a primer under my mineral makeup to help control oil and help my foundation glide on smoothly and easily. Then, I either use the Kryolan Anti-Shine powder or the Silk Powder again, as a finishing powder over my foundation.
~OIL-CONTROL RATING/REPURCHASE?: 4 out of 5; I still have 6 jars of Tinted Silk Dust because I stocked up before the discontinuation but when I'm out, I'm definitely repurchasing somewhere else.

********************

The last powder is Everyday Minerals Rice Powder in Sunlight...

~TEXTURE: Not as fine and light as the Kryolan powder. Matte and translucent. Also available in "Soft Bronze" color, which is still translucent and colorless on me.
~AMOUNT/PRICE: 8g for $12, can be purchased in a 6-piece kit for $34
~INGREDIENTS: Organic rice powder, mica, magnesium stearate, iron oxides
~SKIN REACTION: No adverse reactions
~APPLICATION: I've used a flat-top, powder and stippling brush- makes no difference.
~WEBSITE DESCRIPTION: "A translucent finishing powder with soft yellow undertones that helps to neutralize ruddiness in the skin. It works great as a primer to help mattify without drying the skin and delivers a bright, fresh finish- all in one versatile product!"
~OIL-CONTROL RATING/REPURCHASE?: Did the same as the EDM Kaolin so I give it a 2 out of 5. I won't be repurchasing and this was also a free gift too anyway.

********************

Oh, I forgot about Bare Minerals Mineral Veil, which did nothing for me. It's a nice finishing powder but for controlling oily skin- meh! It's corn starch based so that can be irritating for acne prone skin.

********************

I've also tried the following 3 PRODUCTS with no luck...

~Origins Zero Oil: Way back in the day, I used to use Origins products, which are very nice but it got too pricey for me. Anywho... Zero Oil is a liquid with solid particles in it; you're supposed to shake it up and pat it on your shiny areas. It didn't work so well, it's really messy and it may leave white marks on your face. You have to make sure you have clean hands before applying and the product may spill out of the bottle. $12 for 18 ml
~Smashbox Anti-Shine: Didn't work at all for me and it broke me out. Pricey at $27 for 1 oz.
~Lancome Pure Focus (I think the older product was called T-Controle): This is a gel-type primer and mattifier which worked pretty well but it ended up breaking me out. =( Plus, it's pricey- $27 for 1 oz.

********************
Again, way back in the day, I did some research and tried these two METHODS to help control the oilies.

~The Milk of Magnesia (MoM) Mask: Make sure you get the original flavor, not mint or any other flavor! And don't drink it! Wash your face like normal in the morning and apply this with a cotton ball like a mask, avoiding your eye area. Leave it on for about 10 minutes then rinse it off. Then moisturize and apply your makeup like normal. It helped me a lot, well, at least for the first few hours. I can't remember why I stopped using it. I think I just got tired of doing it each day. Maybe I'll try it again.

~The Egg White Mask: Just crack an egg open and separate the yolk from the white. Take the white part (the albumen) and apply it to your face like a mask. Leave on for a few minutes then rinse. There's different recipes; some people add lemon juice or honey. It tightens your pores and dries up quickly. It did work a little to help control oiliness but then I started to think about the Salmonella on my face. Eww...

*******************

FINAL THOUGHTS

I hope this post has offered a few suggestions for you in helping to control oily skin. Remember, these results were based on my own personal experiences, so just because a product did, or did not, work for me does not mean it will, or will not, work for you.

My favorite products to use on a daily basis are: Kryolan Anti-Shine Powder, discontinued Everyday Minerals Tinted Silk Dust, and Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets (the blue ones; they're the best ever!)
